Can two miniature paintings bring down a government? When a young German woman is bequeathed two paintings – presumed destroyed during the siege of Madrid in 1936 – a simple errand becomes a deadly chase. The new blood of Europe encounters the old Blood of Spain, revealing secret allegiances and ambitions of power, as an international cast of characters journey to the dark soul of Spain’s ignoble past.

Greed, vanity, pride, envy and lust fuel a murderous hunt for … vengeance? supremacy? or truth? After Goya will change the way you think about Spain.

Haarlson Phillipps lived in the north of England for twenty years before moving to Barcelona. He lives in the Eixample with a very forgiving partner and her teenage son. He has worked as a milkman, railway signal technician, theatre set painter, community artist, arts administrator and voluntary sector fundraising adviser.
He is very proud of his daughter, currently reading PPE at Oxford, and his son, who is currently planning an expedition to east Africa.

When not reading and writing he enjoys good company, good food and drink, conversation, visiting contemporary art galleries and art museums, painting, long walks in the hills and pretending to practice castellano and català. He is currently working on Heavensfield, a crime novel set in the North of England.

“An intelligent literary thriller … better than the so-called blockbusters I used to read when Head Buyer at Waterstone’s,” Scott Pack, publisher at The Friday Project. (A HarperCollins imprint)

“This is a strong thriller. It’s tautly written, has good pace, good dialogue and an intriguing plot. … the narrative moves at a cracking pace. Characters are all well drawn – a smooth and easy read … a gripping tale.”

“I enjoyed reading this immensely. The story, right from the onset, is gripping and very well written … a superb story… The Spanish Civil War introduction sets the scene perfectly for things to come…a winner… intrigue and eccentric interesting characters … many finely phrased metaphors – a superb thriller.”

“Interesting cast of characters, lots of local color and a plot that zips along.”

“Extremely impressed … an excellent and accomplished writer who has that wonderful capability of convincing the reader that the characters, locations and plot are all authentic.”

“I stayed up all night to read all 300 odd pages. I could not put it down. It really is that good. That’s why I was nearly an hour late to work this morning.”
